The split skirt has a total of eight panels with a false front opening that closes with buttons.  There are two optional patch pockets on the front.  The font flap shown in the View A illustration is detachable.  The top can be made as a vest or a jacket with sleeves.  The front does not overlap and meets at center front.  The leggings can be made with front or side openings.

View A - Ladies Bicycle Costume is a copy of a period 1890's pattern.  It includes a double breasted Basque with collar and revers (lapels), Leg O'Mutton sleeves, pleated back, and belt.  The skirt has double box pleats in front and back, with roomy bloomers underneath.  The bloomers blouse over the leggings and are made of same or similar fabric as the Basque.  A dickey with a high collar goes under the Basque.  View B jacket has the front double breasted and has a wrap around high collar.  The back, sleeves and belt are the same as View A.

This pattern for a split skirt is taken from a tailoring guide of 1901. The Split Riding Skirt is ankle length, and the Bicycle Skirt is calf length. The center front has buttons to close the split. The center back has double box pleats to hide the split legs. There are two side front plackets with flaps for the closure. This skirt is suitable for riding, hiking, bicycling, hunting, and other sporting outfits.
